Jewellery Care Tips
Jewellery is more than just something beautiful—it’s often filled with sentiment, history, and personal meaning. Whether it’s a treasured family heirloom that has been repaired, a special gift, or a piece you bought to celebrate yourself, proper care helps preserve its beauty and value over time.
With just a few simple habits, you can keep your jewellery looking its best and avoid unnecessary damage or wear. Here are our top tips to help you protect and enjoy your pieces for years to come.
Remove Jewellery Before Certain Activities: Everyday activities like gardening, swimming, or even housework can damage your jewellery—especially gold pieces. Chlorine, for example, can weaken gold and strip the rhodium plating from white gold over time. If your white gold has started to look dull or yellowish, we offer professional rhodium or palnic re-plating to restore its bright white, clean finish. Many of our customers like to do this annually—often timed with a birthday or anniversary as it can make the perfect gift.
Keep It Away from Harsh Chemicals: Perfume, hairspray and lotions can all dull or damage your jewellery. Apply these first, then put your jewellery on last. If your pieces are already showing signs of dullness, we can give them a clean and polish in-store to bring back there to their former glory.
Store Pieces Separately: Use a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box with compartments to prevent scratches and tangling, especially with delicate chains or softer gemstones. If you’re not sure what gemstones you have or how to care for them, bring them in- our team can tell you more about your specific stones and how to look after them.
Take care with Jewellery especially in Winter: Periodically inspect your jewellery, especially rings, for loose settings or claws especially in winter, claw settings are extremely vulnerable to wool from jumpers and gloves. If a piece of wool gets under your claw this could lift or remove it completely, making your stone vulnerable. We offer complimentary claw, and setting checks every day of the week. If your ring is due a check—or you wear it every day—it’s worth stopping by, especially during autumn and winter.
Don’t Sleep in Your Jewellery: It may seem harmless, but sleeping with jewellery on can cause wear and tear over time—especially on chains and earrings and you can unknowingly damage the settings on your rings by catching them in any loose threads on your blankets or bedding. If the worst does happen, we have a jewellery repair service, which uses our own jewellery workshop.
Have It Professionally Checked and Cleaned: Bring your jewellery into us at least every 3 months, this is a completely free service which we do in-store all day, every day – no appointment needed. This allows us to fully inspect your jewellery, checking for any setting damage, loose stones or general wear and tear and maintain any plating. We will also give your pieces a deep clean and bring back any lost sparkle and shine allowing you to leave with your piece looking as good as new.
